Who is IT support employee and what does he/she do?

Information Technology (IT) support employee who is generally referred to as tech support employee provide services to clients and customers using company’s or vendor’s product. Normally, a IT support employee takes in telephone calls and responds to the customer. The main responsibility of an IT support employee is to analyze and troubleshoot the various problems that occur to client/customer while using product (here product may refer to hardware, software or any other system which is computer alike). An IT support employee is strongly skilled with knowledge on various technical products and network devices. IT Support job description can be clearly explained through following duties and responsibilities of an IT support employee.

Duties and Responsibilities of an IT support employee

  • Help installing the product to a customer and provide guidance in using the product efficiently.
  • Receive calls from customer and reply to them in polite manner asking them for any queries, normally this is undertaken by help desk IT support employee.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot the problems faced by the customers and provide them with enough solutions
  • Writes manuals for the use of a product, which is utilized by customers in using the product, it is also utilized by non-tech employees for installing product at customer house/home.
  • Monitors a network and make adjustments which are needed.
  • On whole helps in maintaining proper functionality of a system and provide support for customers whenever needed.

 2. The Qualifications and Expertise required for IT support employee:

Educational qualification required:

To endeavor career as an IT support (tech support) employee one must have a bachelor degree in Information Technology or Computer science or any computer related subject. Other than these bachelor degrees, certification through some training programs also helps the course. After getting a job in a company, undergoing training for particular product is a must, which is provided by the company. Most of the above courses help student in understanding a system and achieving communication skills.

Skills required for an IT support employee:

  • Good communication and pleasing skills.
  • Excellent knowledge on computer and other relating products.
  • Good analytical and interpreting skills, which are required to understand and analyze the problems.
